This piece reflects the way I feel wearing jewelry as it contributes massively to who I am as a person. I wear rings on all my fingers, necklaces, bracelets, earrings. Without these there is a feeling of uncomfort which I wanted to portray to some degree in this painting.
The use of the thread for the face as well as pins and beads for the jewellery allowed me to add texture to the canvas. The colours chosen were to contrast each other and represent what is felt when wearing jewelry. The black signifies the “nakedness” while the contrasting yellow and teal symbolises the complete feeling of joy due to their brightness. It can be used as a form of expression, to embellish an outfit or to boost ones confidence. I wanted to portray the powerful presence jewellery can have on an individual which was why I used black thread for the woman, which contrasts well with the pearls in order to enhance its presence on the canvas. Through the use of gold safety pins, I wanted to create more contrast. The gold creates a feeling of luxury and elegance which fits with the idea of jewelry, but it’s used in an abstract way that adds definition onto the canvas and amplifies the idea that jewelry is stylish and dignified.
